What Qualifications Should My Tradesman Have?

Simply relying on reputation sometimes isn’t enough when it comes to hiring a tradesman – making sure they are qualified to carry out the job you require should really be your priority. A qualified tradesman will also complete the job to a high standard and meet the required safety regulations.

If you are in need of any gas works being carried out you must ensure that your tradesman is Gas Safe Registered, this is required by law so it is imperative that you check their ID cards, especially the expiry date as well as the individual licence number – you can check the licence number to ensure the qualification is still valid. Any electrician carrying out work on your property should hold a Part P qualification, an essential qualification for most electrical jobs around the home, legally though only an electrician who is qualified can carry out any electrical work in bathrooms or kitchens. It is important to check that your electrician can sign their work off to meet regulations. Using an unqualified electrician will be flagged in a survey when you come to sell your property.

Make sure you ask to see a copy of their certificate, this lists the company that the tradesman studied with and registration number. To check you electricians qualification simply visit the awarding bodies website and enter their registration number.

Plumbers should be qualified to NVQ level 2 (or SVQ in Scotland), you may find that older plumbers have a City & Guilds qualification, which is perfectly acceptable. Typically you will find a plumbers skill is developed on the job, training with a more experienced plumber.
