5 Dangers of Not Getting Enough Sleep

Recent research published by a group of US scientists claims that people who regularly get fewer than six hours of sleep each night are four times more likely to contract a cold. Sleep allows the body to rejuvenate and bolster its natural defences, so, by sleeping less, your body receives fewer of those benefits.
But, a weakened immune system is not the only negative consequence of regularly sleeping fewer than six hours.

Millions of Britons Have High Diabetes Risk

Diabetes kills an estimated 22,000 Britons each year. However, many of these deaths could have been prevented had the individuals been properly diagnosed and treated for the disease. According to the National Cardiovascular Health Intelligence Network, an estimated 5 million Britons have blood sugar levels that indicate they have a high risk of developing diabetes.
In addition to contributing to premature death, diabetes can cause loss of vision, increased chance of stroke, kidney and nerve damage, and fatigue. Although diabetes can be fatal if left untreated, the disease can be easily managed if properly diagnosed. That is why the NHS has developed a diabetes prevention programme (DPP). The focus of the DPP is to address the behaviour of those who are at risk of developing diabetes, as well as those who have already been diagnosed, as a way to help them adopt healthy diet and lifestyle choices. However, the programme is currently only established in seven cities across the United Kingdom—the list of which can be found at www.england.nhs.uk/ourwork/qual-clin-lead/action-for-diabetes/diabetes-prevention.

How to Prevent a Hangover

For some, the pained, unpleasant mornings that follow a boisterous night out are often spent trying traditional hangover remedies: glass after glass of water and a large, greasy breakfast. However, Dutch researchers have recently discovered that these ‘tried and true’ methods are wholly inadequate when compared to the only guaranteed remedy—drinking less alcohol.
